We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler

1. The back and forth narration – past to present to past again – drove me crazy, yet helped weave the story together so seamlessly that it really couldn’t have been done any other way. Clever, smart writing.
2. Harlow was a disaster, and I loved her. Every disastrous second.
3. Fern!! Oh, Fern. This book was difficult to read for the same reasons as The One and Only Ivan. Of course, this book is purely fiction, but Ivan was based on a true story, and cruelty to animals is all too real. It reminds me of the quote from the gorilla enclosure at Riverbanks Zoo, in Columbia, SC.
